SAS Explore: SAS 9.4M8 will be supported until Jan2028, with more maintenance releases scheduled

At SAS Explore, which was held in Las Vegas in September 2023, the future of SAS 9 was clarified in https://blogs.sas.com/content/sasdummy/2023/09/29/sas-9-and-sas-eg/.

SAS 9.4M8 will be supported until Jan2028.
There will be future releases of SAS 9, so it will be supported well beyond Jan2028.
SAS Studio will continue to be the best environment for SAS Viya.
However, Enterprise Guide will soon be able to access both SAS 9 and SAS Viya.

VIEWS News 73 (2023Q3) has been published!

VIEWS News issue 73 has now been published and in Q3 as the title states!

Supporting all Foundation SAS programmers, this newsletter continues to bring you information to make the most of SAS 9. This newsletter issue includes more ideas about plotting multiple values and a book review from LeRoy Bessler, Nina L Werner gives us another SAS tip, and Richard Carson continues his discussion about configuring of SAS processes without editing them in the third part of a series of articles about KT. As usual I have publicised some SAS‑related events for the next few months, and I have also added some more SAS formats, options and functions that you may or may not have come across before, but you might find interesting, and even useful.

VIEWS News 72 (2023Q2) has been published!

VIEWS News issue 72 has now been published and in Q2 as the title states!

Even though Foundation SAS is being pushed to one side by SAS Viya, this newsletter continues to bring you information about making the most of SAS 9. This newsletter issue includes another way to draw butterfly plots from LeRoy Bessler, I asked ChatGPT to write a SAS program, and Richard Carson continues his discussion about configuring of SAS processes without editing them in the second part of a series of articles about KT. How to be a freelance contractor

You start a new contract as the outsider, and everybody (who doesn’t already know you) treats you with suspicion. My plan for a new contract is always to produce something tangible in the first week. It could be a neat way to solve a problem, a simple explanation to a problem experienced by several colleagues, or a new report/data set/macro.

After that you may be asked for your advice, and you should work hard to give it as simply as possible. Then you get asked more questions, which develop into trust. It never happens overnight, but a freelance contractor is a resource to be valued and used!

A thought for today: No-one will give you a job. You have to earn it!

I regularly visit LinkedIn and read the discussions, where they exist. What amazes me are the responses to job posts which just have “Interested”, a name, or an email address. Those who post this type of response are only boosting LinkedIn’s count of “engagements”, not their chances of landing that job.

No-one will give you a job. You have to earn it!

It is true that doing well in a job interview it usually critical. However, in order to do well in the interview, you have to be offered one. A good CV/resume will help, but, even before you send that to an employer, there are ways to improve your chances of being offered an interview:

Are you already known to the employer? Do you know anyone that already works there?
Are you actively participating in LinkedIn or other groups? By participating I don’t mean posting “Interested”, but asking insightful questions or offering helpful answers, which demonstrate your subject knowledge.
Have you presented in conferences or webinars? Presenting papers can be difficult at first, but by researching your topics thoroughly in advance, and incorporating your research into your presentations, you will gain confidence and show that you can explain your subject knowledge clearly to others. You will also find the questions asked afterwards to be easier to answer, or could lead you to research a new topic for a future presentation.

Getting a job should never be easy. It requires you to put in that extra little bit of effort, so that you can stand out amongst the candidates, and the employers see the potential in you and also see the benefits you can bring to their company.

No-one will give you a job. You have to earn it!

Is proofreading your own documents possible? Definitely not!

The human brain can automatically translate text to give you the correct meaning, even though the letters in the words have been jumbled up.

The first paragraph demonstrates an ability of the human brain, which has been called “Typogycemia”. In fact you can “read” meaning into words that only have the correct first and last letters, but similar word lengths, provided the context is known! So is it really surprising that the following typos, all found in the SAS Opportunities group on LinkedIn, happen?

AND, not ANS, and CHANGING, not CHAINGING.

To me PROJECTING should only be used before slides, nail, hook or vomit. PROJECT would be better. (CDISC TRAINING), COURSE WILL COVERS makes little sense to me, and ought to be replaced with (CDISC TRAINING) COURSE:. If you must include “cover”, then the correct English usage would be COURSE COVERS or COURSE WILL COVER. Also DURATION, not DRATION.

OPPORTUNITIES, not OPPORTUNITES, and this was in the SAS Opportunities group too!

This typoglycemia even appears in validated training courses. Recently I was trained to use a new insulin pump by a representative of the manufacturing company. The slides used had gone through a rigorous approval process before being accepted for use in public training. About 5 slides from the end of the presentation I noticed a typo on a slide that was only briefly shown. Professional was shown as “Profesional”, and no-one had noticed it before!

The problem is caused by the human brain “seeing” what it expects, rather than what is there. In 1981, while I was writing my doctoral thesis, I gave a draft copy of the first chapter to a colleague. I thought I had done a pretty good writing job, but my colleague found 60 spelling and grammar errors in the first 10 pages!! I realised then that I could not proofread my own writing, however I can spot typos and errors in grammar at a single glance, because of the way I was taught to spell at school, but only when I have not written the text myself.
