At 4.5% ABV it is our strongest beer. Devon Darter asserts its unique character right from its first scent, sending forth first rich chocolates, then towards a surprisingly ripe, almost tropical fruit bloom. It’s smooth pour amasses a calm but formidable head to the ale, the bubbles of which disperse and regroup to release bursts of peach, faint toffee, and coastal grasses. The Inspiration: Inspired by the lighthouse being the first in the world to use electricity, we decided to create this brilliant copper-coloured ale to light up your glass. The Name: Souter Lighthouse is an iconic cliff top beacon on the North East coast of England. Boldly hooped in red and white. When it first opened in 1871, it was considered a technological marvel, being the first lighthouse built to use electricity. Decommissioned in 1988, the machinery still remains in working order. Today it is owned by the National Trust and offers a great family day out. Food Pairings: An excellent choice to pair with a variety of foods, finding the perfect partner in fish and chips. The name Clootie Dumpling comes from the traditional Scottish spiced pudding and the cloth or cloot it is wrapped in. This fruity, spiced winter ale exhibits all the warming characters of that famous dish. On the nose: A rich fruity nose with notes of cinnamon and ginger and a background of nutty Crystal malt. On the palate: A smooth mouthful with a subtle yet complex blend of rich malt and spice flavours, balanced by fruity hops, this leads to a spicy warming finish. This light weight tawny coloured beer is only available for a limited time throughout the year (from Mid November - mid January). It has an aroma of spiced fruits and dried fruits, with hints of smooth roasted malt. Clootie Dumpling has a soft rounded palate, with flavours of dried fruits, citrus fruits and spices. The key ingredients in this rare high quality product are Bramling Gold, First Gold and Fuggles hop combined with malt flavours to deliver the spiced fruits and dried fruit aspects.
