Abstract

There is no utility which will control the versions of SAS catalog entries provided by the SAS Institute, so SAS/AF application development teams must provide their own. This paper will discuss the big question of how much effort is really needed to create adequate controls for different sized development teams, giving the risks and benefits of a spectrum of version control strategies. These strategies described range from having no version control at all, where the risks to a software development could be great, to software solutions, where the cost of production could exceed the benefits to a small development team. Each SAS/AF application development team must select the appropriate strategy which provides a balance between the risk and the development costs from those available.
